After the loss of their boat workshop to fire the owners of this 1884 built stone house decided to re-build a workshop to the west gable and refurb/extend an existing rear extension that was falling into disrepair. The rear extension/refurb will extend the kitchen with a less formal dining area, a laundry space and a new WC. More daylight into the existing kitchen was a key part of the brief.
After closer inspection of the stone walls, a demolition and re-build was considered the best solution, both for construction quality and thermal bridging detailing. The new build is to be constructed of timber frame with wood based insulation, and stone/timber cladding. Maintaining the original opening composition. A limecrete floor insulated with recycled foam glass insulation will help to minimised the use of concrete.
